Tracking with the Driver app

Updated

The Driver app can serve as a GPS tracking device when a vehicle lacks a dedicated GPS tracker.

When enabled, the Driver’s smartphone or tablet sends location data to Frotcom using its built-in GPS. This allows fleets to track vehicles without installing hardware.

When should I use this?

Use Tracking with the Driver app if:

  • The vehicle does not have a GPS tracking device

  • You need temporary or flexible tracking

  • Drivers already use the Frotcom Driver app

Note: Vehicles with a GPS tracker installed cannot use the Driver app for tracking.

Requirements

Before tracking can start, all three steps below must be completed.

Step 1 – Associate the Driver with a Vehicle without GPS

Only Vehicles without a GPS device can be tracked using the Driver app:

  1. Make sure the vehicle has no GPS tracker assigned

  2. Associate the Driver with that vehicle

Step 2 – Allow the Driver to change tracking settings

Fleet Managers must explicitly allow drivers to enable tracking from the app.

Option A – Account level

  1. Go to Administration > Account > Driver app

  2. Enable Tracking with the Driver app

  3. Save changes

This option is disabled by default.

Option B – Driver level (custom permissions)

  1. Go to Administration > Drivers > Mobile terminal

  2. Enable Customized configuration and permissions

  3. Enable Tracking with the Driver app

  4. Save changes

Step 3 – Enable tracking in the Driver app

Once permission is granted, the Driver must enable tracking in the app.

  1. Open the Driver app

  2. Go to Settings

  3. Enable Tracking with Driver app

Tracking is off by default and must be enabled by the Driver.

Tracking behaviour

Once all steps are complete, the Driver app starts automatically sending location data.

Position updates

  • One position every 1 minute when the vehicle is moving

  • One position every 20 minutes when the vehicle is stopped
This applies regardless of whether the device is connected to external power.

Ignition simulation

Because no physical tracker is installed, ignition is simulated based on movement.

  • Ignition is considered ON when: Vehicle speed is greater than 15 km/h for 30 seconds

  • Ignition is considered OFF when: Vehicle speed is equal to or below 10 km/h for 60 seconds

This behaviour matches vehicles whose GPS tracker is not connected to the ignition.

Privacy mode

If Privacy mode is enabled in the Driver app:

  • No tracking data is shared
  • This applies regardless of tracking settings or data source

Privacy mode always overrides tracking.

What you will see in Frotcom

When tracking is active:

  • Vehicle positions appear normally on the map

  • Trips, stops, and reports behave as expected

  • Ignition status is based on simulated movement

Common questions

  • Can I use this if the vehicle already has a GPS tracker?
No. Vehicles with a GPS device must use the hardware tracker.

  • Does tracking stop if the app is closed?
Tracking depends on app permissions, battery optimisation settings, and operating system behaviour. For best results, allow the app to run in the background.

  • Does Privacy mode affect this feature?
Yes. Privacy mode completely disables tracking.
