09. Using a Camera to Track Vehicles Without GPS

Updated

If you’re installing a camera on a vehicle that doesn’t have its own GPS device, you can now choose to track that vehicle using the camera’s data. This setting is only available for vehicles of the type “Vehicle without GPS”.

⚠️ Important: This does not activate any video-related features. It only enables basic GPS tracking from the camera.

When can I enable this?

You’ll see the option “Use camera as GPS tracker” only if:

  • The vehicle assigned to the camera is of type “Vehicle without GPS”.

For any other vehicle type, this option won’t appear.

You can enable or disable this setting in the Intranet, in the following places:

1. When Adding a Camera

  • Assign the camera to a vehicle.
  • If the vehicle is of type “Vehicle without GPS”, a checkbox will appear:
    • [ ] Use camera as GPS tracker
    • Leave it unchecked if you don’t want to track this vehicle.
    • Check it if you do.

1. When Editing an existing Camera

You can update this setting at any time, as long as the camera is assigned to a “Vehicle without GPS”.

An indicator will also appear in the license plate dropdown list, along with a note: “Vehicles marked with (*) support camera tracking.”

What happens when I change or transfer the camera?

  • If you change the vehicle assigned to the camera:
    • The “Use camera as GPS tracker” setting will be reset.
    • If the new vehicle is also of type “Vehicle without GPS”, you’ll need to enable tracking again.
  • If you transfer the camera:
    • The setting will be cleared.
    • You’ll need to reconfigure it once the camera is reassigned.

Where can I see which cameras are being used as GPS trackers?

In the Camera list, there’s a new column:

  • Camera as GPS tracker
    • YES - this camera is tracking its assigned vehicle.
    • NO - tracking is not enabled for this camera.

Once enabled, your vehicle without GPS will be tracked in Frotcom using the camera’s location data.

You’ll see the following waypoint markers along the route:

  • Ignition status changes
  • Waypoint direction markers
  • Start point
  • Stops

You will also have access to the following information in the Quick Info widget and the mouse hover infobox:

  • vehicle info
  • journey details
    • timestamp
    • speed
  • Location

Graphs and trips will also be available.
