CANbus

CANBus (also referred to as CAN or CAN bus) is a network used in many every-day products, consisting of multiple microcontrollers that need to communicate with each other. Most vehicles being produced today use CANBus.

Some vehicles, namely trucks, construction equipment and farming equipment, implement on top of the CANBus a protocol designated by J1939. This protocol allows external equipment to read some vehicle data such as engine RPMs, engine coolant temperature, etc.
